In a surprise move which has opened a Pandora’s Box of sorts for the Geographical Indications Registry, Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams, a trust that administers the Venkateswara Temple has been awarded GI registration that bars others from marketing the prassadam prepared by the trust under the same name. The move has been criticized severely as it may give the wrong impression to the general public that GIs are available for individual producers as well as opposed to certain geographical locations.
Before the dust could have settled on the issue of TTD prassadam, it was reported that the Bambino Agro Industries which is reportedly the exclusive manufacturer of pasta with durum wheat semolinain India, has applied for a GI for Bambino vermicelli.
Though, it has been heard that after the cancellation of previous petition by one Mr. Praveen Raj in 2012, Madras High Court has agreed to take up the issue. As and when we get our hands on the judgment we will upload the same on our blog. Keeping visiting us for further updates on the issue.
